Happy Fathers’ Day to all you wonderful fathers! We praise you and we praise you for the job you do. Special recognition to Fathers whose lives are impacted by mental illness and the rough road we travel.
We are busy getting ready for our June meeting. As we mentioned in an earlier correspondence this second quarter of the year our NAMI Urban Greater Cincinnati Network on Mental Illness changes our meeting location and for June we will hold this and our final meeting for the quarter at Hamilton Choices, 644 Linn St. Suite 900, Cincinnati, OH 45203 (this is the same office building Duke energy is located, at the corner of 8th and Linn.) Be there! Come, join us!
For your information and for information to pass along to families and other members of your community, we will be holding our first Family to Family education course at Hamilton Choices, starting 6:00PM, Tuesday, August 25, 2009. Contact Geraldine Frazier, 513-830-5114, ex# 702. Keep in mind that class size is limited to 12 so, sign up early. See more at our website, www.ugcnomi.org.
Again, we want to thank Hamilton Choices’ Andrew Shapiro, Executive Director and Celia White, Clinical Director for welcoming us and making us all feel ‘right at home’ with their hot, freshly popped corn and cold drinks. If you have not been there, you really missed something. You can smell it while coming up the elevator.
Please share this information with others you know:
In addition to the upcoming Family to Family education program, we want to remind you what an earlier speaker has said at our meetings, “funding and representation for our communities are based on an accurate census count.” Let’s all vow to let Washington know we are here and we have a voice. The Census is coming, make sure you are counted!
When we meet on Thursday, June 18, we plan to help with some problem solving techniques; (brainstorming) as well as collecting information on what issues and concerns are personally affecting our members. We will welcome all new members and encourage and appreciate their input and ideas.
We are planning for our July and August meetings. Did you know that July is Minority Monthly Mental Health Month? For July we are want to pull together a cook-out at Williams YMCA! Later this year, we want to have a Garage/Rummage Sale. Tell you more about it at our upcoming meetings!
NAMI Urban Greater Cincinnati Network on Mental Illness (NAMI UGCNOMI) offers support, education and advocacy to families and consumers living with a mental illness. Come join us. Our time together is informative and empowering. Your voice in what we do and how we get it done is important. We want to hear from you so, please be there.
As we develop leaders in our community we are please to announce that we now have two members of our executive committee elected to the board for NAMI Ohio. We did not get the grant for NAMI national’s pilot programs for their African American outreach, Sharing Hope. But lots of good things are taking place, nevertheless. We are waiting to hear about our proposal for a small grant from NAMI OH to help us maintain our outreach efforts. We will let you know.
We continue to be interested in the treatment and services for those living with serious and persistent mental illness who are incarcerated, their discharge planning and housing upon release. We keep current about mental illness, research and events that help our members.
Eli Braun continues his work with Ohio Justice and Policy Center, developing policy on discharge planning from prison and jails and wants to hear from anyone with that experience. If you have or know of someone with that experience and would like to improve discharge planning we want to hear from you!
And, don’t forget our interest in the NAACP with their interest in the success of our communities. Their meetings are currently being held at South Avondale School across from the Urban League Building.
Susan Angel keeps us informed about Fuel Cincinnati.
Collaborations and support systems development are key components of our organization. We believe in the practice of sharing information, listening to our members’ concerns and input and working together to resolve problems. Everyone is welcomed. Our members are families, consumers and providers of mental health services, providers of community services and concerned members of our community.
